Boardman track finishes regular season on high note


The Boardman boys track team concluded the 2016 regular season and celebrated Senior Night with a 106-40-26 victory over Ashtabula Lakeside and Youngstown East on May 3.

The Spartans finish the regular season with a record of 11-1 overall and 7-1 in the AAC.

The Spartans opened the meet with a second place finish by the all senior team of Nathan Hadley, Adam Deeley, Ethan Schwendeman and Brett Brunko in the 4x800 meter relay. In the next event, the 110-meter

hurdles, senior Nick Cessna placed second and sophomore Gavin Yi was fourth. In the 100-meter dash, Spartan sophomore Justice Jama placed fourth, and the 4x200 relay team of Cessna, junior Jeff Kollar, freshman Manny Perez and freshman Nick Torres placed second. In the 1600-meter run, junior Chris Butler took first. He was followed by junior Nathaniel Ams in second place and junior Nick Digiacomo in third.

The Spartans placed second in the 4x100 meter relay with the team of sophomore Jason Fabian, Kollar, Perez and Torres. Senior Brendon Lucas finished first in the 400-meter run, followed by junior Kobe Adu-Poku in second. Cessna placed first in the 300 hurdles with senior Jacob Rauschenberg in fourth.

“Tonight was an opportunity to allow our seniors to go out in style,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “Their work ethic over the years and leadership this season has provided an example for our underclassmen to follow.”

In the 800-meter run, senior Tyler Kellam placed first and sophomore Mark Moradian was second. Senior Kris Santilli placed first in the 200-meter dash with Adu-Poku in third. The next event was the 3200-meter run, which was won by Butler with Ams in second and junior Matt Maroni in third. The 4x400 relay team of seniors Lucas, Hadley, Santilli and Kellam closed the meet with a first place finish.

In the field events, senior Jason Jama won the shot put, with junior George Wallace in second, senior Markese Haynes in third and sophomore Steven Amstutz fourth. Wallace placed first in the discus with senior Shawn Devlin in second and Haynes third. Junior Vi Trihn Luu took second in the pole vault with Moradian third and junior Don Lewis in fourth. In the high jump, Justice Jama took first and then placed first in the long jump with Torres in fourth.
