Dam repairs at parks

Ohio will invest more than $2 million in dam repairs at three Ohio state parks, including Lake Milton State Park.
The state project will help bring the earthen embankment, concrete spillway and lake drain system at Lake Milton Dam into compliance with Ohio dam safety laws and rules.
“Lake Milton is a recreational treasure for Milton Township and the surrounding area, as well as a crucial part of the Mahoning River’s water infrastructure,” said state Rep. John Boccieri of Poland, D-59th, in a release announcing the funding. Child is found safe

A child thought to be missing for about 45 minutes Wednesday in the 100 block of Ayers Street on the East Side was found safe.
Police were called to the street by someone who said they heard a small child scream and when they looked outside, the child was gone.
Police and neighbors scoured the area and detectives were called before the boy was found hiding on the porch of a nearby home. The boy had hid there but then had gotten stuck before he was able to be found.
Probing robbery

Police are investigating a robbery Tuesday at Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.
A store employee reported a woman entered the store about 2 p.m., concealed about $250 worth of merchandise in her purse, then attempted to leave without paying. According to a police report, the woman purportedly dropped the items when an alarm sounded, pushed the store employee when confronted, and escaped in a vehicle she was driving.
In another matter, police arrested a suspect wanted in a May 6 robbery reported at Home Depot, 7001 Southern Blvd. Joshua Laughlin, 36, of West Virginia, was arrested on a warrant for the felony.
A police report from the incident says Laughlin purportedly punched a store employee who attempted to apprehend him for taking safety glasses and filling a backpack with other items.

Al-Nakba anniversary

The Arab American Cultural and Educational Center of Youngstown will host an assembly to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the Al Nakba at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at 15 Belgrade Ave. Doors open at 6:30.
Al-Nakba, or “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinian people and the destruction of 531 villages and 11 localities resulting from enacting the United Nations resolution that created the state of Israel in 1948.
Dr. Seif Da’Na, professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, will discuss the current perspective and historical significance of Al-Nakba.
Admission is free.
