Presenting youth in a positive light and showcasing resources in the Mahoning Valley to help them remains the primary purpose behind the “Unity in the Community” parade and Community Day.

Warriors Inc. and Eagles Christian Preschool are co-sponsors of the 12th annual event set June 4.

Wendy Robinson, community ministry liaison, emphasized the event’s positive aspects. “We want to connect the community to resources and resources to the community,” she said.

Parade participants include businesses, community organizations, nonprofit agencies, churches, community leaders and politicians.

Community and high-school bands and choirs are encouraged to participate to share their talents. Deadline to register and complete an application is May 27.

Robinson said this year Warriors has especially encouraged churches to participate in order to spread the word about upcoming vacation Bible schools and summer activities for children.

“This provides an opportunity for churches to share this information,” Robinson said. “Businesses and organizations can share what they do in information stations. It’s important that they share what they do so people know what’s out there.”

The parade has attracted between 60 and 100 business and organizations to participate in the events. It takes place at 10 a.m. June 4.

The Community Day Celebration focuses on sharing information, and everything is free. “Nothing is sold at this event. This is about sharing resource information,” Robinson said.

A talent showcase highlights the singing, dancing, instrumental skills of youth along with poetry presentations and mime. Members of Creative Expressions at Warriors will participate.

Warriors Inc. is a faith-based organization that mentors youths and young adults. Its name is based on passages in the Bible, which allude to warriors for God.

Though many Warriors activities are recreational, leaders incorporate how they teach life skills such as critical thinking, responsibility, accountability, goal-setting, decision-making, self-esteem and leadership skills. Activities include programs on bicycle safety, playing chess, performing arts, handling finances, fishing and mentoring.
