Children's Grief Camp scheduled

Staff report

Hospice of the Valley will sponsor two Children’s Grief Camps this summer for any child in the community aged 8 to 15 who has experienced the death of a loved one. The camp provides an opportunity for children to learn valuable coping skills and to meet other children who have experienced a loss.

Staff and trained volunteers provide planned activities to help kids grieve and express themselves in a safe and healthy manner. Lunch and snacks are provided during the day as well as at a family gathering at the conclusion of camp.

The first camp is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 23 at Roosevelt Park, 800 Struthers-Liberty Road, Campbell, and another will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 30 at Packard Park, Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren.

For more information and registration, contact the bereavement department at 330-549-5850.

Volunteer training is available at various times throughout the year. During that training, volunteers learn about Hospice of the Valley and the team approach of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains.

Volunteers serve in a variety of ways, including as companions for patients at home or in nursing homes as well as support to family members. They also may assist with indirect patient services such as clerical support, reception desk, mail team and fundraising.

Assignments are made close to the volunteer's home; all volunteers must wait one year after the loss of a loved one before becoming a volunteer.

Training sessions are available as follows:

• Salem office, Fridays, May 20 to June 17, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

• Hospice House, Thursdays, July 7 to Aug. 4; 5 to 8:30 p.m.

• St. Joseph's at Eastwood Mall, Mondays, Oct. 3 to 31; 1 to 4:30 p.m.

• Hospice House, Saturdays, Nov. 5 and 12; 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
