Canfield doubles teams bow out

OBERLIN

Both of Canfield’s doubles teams lost first-round matches and were eliminated in three-set matches Tuesday in the Division I district tournament at Oberlin College.

Tim Cianciola and Alfredo Almoyna, the second-seeded duo out of last week’s Canton sectional tournament, fell to Copley’s Gavin Aten and Gustavo Garcia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

Aten and Garcia were the top-seeded team from the Medina sectional.

The Cardinals’ David Hofsess and Bob Long, who were the Canton sectional’s third-seeded team, lost to Walsh Jesuit’s Conner Evans and Ben Smith, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Evans and Smith were the third-seeded duo in last week’s Medina sectional.

The Mahoning Valley had no Division I singles qualifiers from last week’s Canton sectional.

The area’s Divison II singles and doubles qualifiers will begin district play Friday at Springside Tennis and Fitness Club in Akron.

Singles qualifiers from last week’s Boardman sectional tournament include Zach Teffner (Lakeview), Les Horvath (Ursuline), Andrew Engartner (Cardinal Mooney) and Ben Wakefield (Niles).

Doubles qualifiers from Boardman include Andrew Stille and Jacob Stefko (Cardinal Mooney), Luke Tsudis and Like Arfaras (Ursuline), Zach Shoaf and John LaPolla (Warren JFK) and Sam Delatore and San Scotford (Poland).
