List of CEO applicants grows

YOUNGSTOWN

Sixteen people have applied to be the chief executive officer of the city school district.

The number includes three people who have applied since The Vindicator received the initial list of applicants.

The Youngstown City School District Academic Distress Commission will select the CEO, who will be paid by the state, to manage the academically struggling school district.

The commission has extended the deadline to today and will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Choffin Career and Technical Center to review the applications.

The new applicants:

John Covington of Detroit, consultant for school systems involved in implementing personalized learning, since July 2014; served from 2011-14 as CEO of Education Achievement Authority of Michigan.

James Herrholtz of Hubbard, deputy superintendent, Mahoning County Educational Service Center since 2013; formerly associate superintendent, Ohio Department of Education, Division of Learning, 2011-13.

John McMahon of Rock Creek, Ohio, principal Taft Elementary School, Youngstown, since 2014; former Southington Schools superintendent, 2012-14.

The city schools CEO job is expected to pay between $160,000 and $180,000 annually.

Herrholtz was one of the applicants for the state superintendent of public instruction.

Last week, the state school board selected Paolo DeMaria, an education consultant, for that job.
