Ohio grand jury rules fatal police shooting was justified

CLEVELAND (AP) — An Ohio grand jury has followed a prosecutor’s recommendation that a fatal police shooting in a Cleveland suburb was justified and reasonable.

Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty announced the grand jury decision Friday while commending Richmond Heights officer Greg Patterson’s actions.

Patterson fatally shot Carlumandarlo Zaramo on Dec. 6 after Zaramo’s wife called 911 to report that her 46-year-old husband had a gun and had threatened to kill her and their 11-year-old son.

Authorities say Zaramo initially agreed to let officers take him to a hospital and asked for warmer clothes. Officers followed Zaramo to an upstairs bedroom where he stepped into a closet and grabbed a pistol off a shelf. Patterson fired six shots after Zaramo wounded a sergeant who had tried to wrestle the gun away.
