Spartans finish as Mahoning County runners-up

The Boardman Spartans finished as Mahoning County runners-up following a championship meet at Fitch. Spartan senior Brendon Lucas was selected MVP of Division I by the head coaches of all competing schools- the first MVP for Boardman since Mark Hadley in 2013.

The Spartans opened the meet by placing second in the 4x800 with the team of seniors Nathan Hadley and Tyler Kellam and juniors Chris Butler and Kobe Adu-Poku. In the 400-meter dash, Lucas placed first with a time of 50.93 seconds and Adu-Poku was third in 53.43 seconds. Senior Nick Cessna was seventh overall in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles. Lucas placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.89 seconds. Hadley was third in the 3200 at 10:21 and junior Nick Digiacomo was fourth with the same time. Lucas also placed first in the 200 with a time of 22.86 seconds and freshman Manny Perez took seventh place in 25.34 seconds. Hadley was second in the 1600 at 4:29 with Butler in fourth at 4:45. Butler was third in the 800 and sophomore Nick Lascola placed sixth.

The Spartan 4x200 relay team of senior Canon Carlile, Perez and freshmen Josh Rodriguez and Nick Torres placed fifth and the same quartet placed seventh in the 4x100. The 4x400 relay of Lucas, Cessna, Adu-Poku and senior Kris Santilli was third with a time of 3:34.

“Brendon Lucas was dominant today,” said Spartan Head Coach John Phillips. “Also, we had great results and tremendous leadership from a number of guys.”

The field events saw sophomore Justice Jama place sixth in the high jump and junior Don Lewis place third in the pole vault. Senior Jason Jama placed fourth in the shot put with junior George Wallace in fifth and seniors Shawn Devlin and Markese Haynes were sixth and seventh in the discus.

The BW-3 Track Meet MVP was senior Canon Carlile for stepping in to two sprint relays at the last moment and leading his teammates to successful results.

“I can’t say enough about the leadership and class of Canon Carlile,” said Phillips. “He took on a challenge and lead three freshmen teammates competing in their first championship meet to success in the sprint relays.”
