The Boardman Civic Association hosted its 26th annual Academic Achievement Banquet on April 14 at the Boardman Holiday Inn.
There were 126 students from Boardman High School, Cardinal Mooney, Ursuline and Youngstown Christian High School who attended the banquet this year. Out of those students, six were chosen to receive a scholarship for $750 toward their college tuition.
The Boardman Civic Association has a scholarship fund, which is supported by BCA members’ contributions and by the community. Students must meet the standard of having a 3.5 GPA or above and to be involved in community and civic activities.
Doug Sweeney was presented with an award for Business Person of the Year. Elaine Mancini, the founder of the scholarship, was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Mancini founded the scholarship foundation 26 years ago.
Senator Joe Schiavoni was the special guest speaker at the scholarship award banquet. Schiavoni gave a speech to the students about maintaining strong work ethics and to continue to be active in the community.
The six winners of the scholarship were Adele Belgrad, Nicholas Bucci, Addison Cooke-Murphy, Emily Hoban, Veronica Marcella and Natalie Pilolli.
“Twenty-six years ago, my PTA background and my Board of Education background led me to think that we needed to recognize the academic accomplishments of the seniors in our township,” said Mancini.
