Lawyer: Malpractice lawsuit in Joan Rivers’ death settled

NEW YORK

Melissa Rivers has settled a medical malpractice lawsuit she filed against a New York clinic where her mother, Joan Rivers, had an endoscopy and later died.

Her attorneys confirmed Thursday that the case, which was filed in January 2015, has been settled.

Melissa Rivers said in a statement the settlement would ensure “those culpable for her death have accepted responsibility for their actions.”

The comedian died Sept. 4, 2014, at age 81. The New York City medical examiner found she died of brain damage due to lack of oxygen after she stopped breathing during an endoscopy days earlier.

Rivers’ attorneys wouldn’t reveal the terms of the settlement. They say they want people to focus on Rivers’ legacy.

The clinic, Yorkville Endoscopy, didn’t immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Woody Allen says he won’t read son’s essay

CANNES, France

Woody Allen says he doesn’t read anything written about him, even if it’s by his own son.

Allen said Thursday that he will not read his son Ronan Farrow’s essay that resurrects Dylan Farrow’s allegations that Allen molested her. The Hollywood Reporter published Ronan Farrow’s piece just as Allen was premiering his new movie, “Cafe Society,” at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

The 80-year-old filmmaker told Vanity Fair that he long has refused to read press about himself or his films and included his son’s essay among such content. Allen also declined to address Farrow’s charges, saying he has “said everything I have to say about it.”
