Seahawks WR retires due to neck injury
RENTON, Wash.
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette is retiring six months after suffering a serious neck injury in a game at Dallas.
The team confirmed the retirement and has scheduled a news conference with Lockette today.
Lockette was knocked out and remained motionless on the field for several minutes after a hit by Cowboys safety Jeff Heath during the Nov. 1 victory over Dallas. He was eventually strapped to a backboard and taken off the field. Lockette underwent surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas the next day to stabilize his neck.
Lockette has been a special teams standout for the Seahawks since joining the team in 2011.
Third party tries to butt into ‘Deflategate’
NEW YORK
A woman who unsuccessfully tried to intervene in Tom Brady’s legal case against the NFL over the “Deflategate” scandal is asking the court to reconsider his four-game suspension.
The filing this week in the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes as the New England Patriots quarterback and the NFL Players Association consider whether to challenge a decision to reinstate the discipline for Brady’s role in using footballs that were improperly inflated.
The woman does not appear to have any connection to Brady or legal standing in the case.
Russia denies doping again
MEXICO CITY
The head of the 2018 World Cup in Russia says there hasn’t been state-sponsored doping in the country, disputing a key finding of a World Anti-Doping Agency investigation.
WADA commission head Dick Pound said last year that Russia seemed to have been sporting a “state-supported” doping program in track and field.
But 2018 World Cup organizing committee chief esecutive Alexey Sorokin says “it’s not like it’s claimed occasionally — that it’s part of a national policy. On the contrary, it’s been said publicly that our policy is no tolerance against doping.”
