WARREN
An Oak Street Southwest man, 48, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The man was found inside a home on First Street, where a woman had called 911, saying the victim was there bleeding.
Police also found a vehicle parked nearby at Highland Avenue and Maple Street with the doors open and the rear window shot out.
The victim and a male with him refused to tell police whether his gunshot injury was related to the vehicle, police said. Police recovered 10 shell casings in the area. The victim was taken to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment.

The man suffered burns to his head, and both were treated for smoke inhalation, said fire Chief Ken Nussle.
When firefighters arrived, the man and woman were in the front yard. The woman said she woke up to the smell of smoke.
Nussle said the fire appears to have started in the kitchen, possibly in the area of the stove. The $55,000 home was a total loss, Nussle said.

Reports said police found a needle and a spoon with suspected heroin residue.
Will seek ODNR grant
STRUTHERS
City council authorized the mayor Wednesday to apply for a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
If the city received the funding available through the state’s Nature Works program, it would cover about $22,000 of $29,000 in improvements, including benches and walkways, at the city’s Northside Gateway Greenspace.
Additionally, council approved a $150 Memorial Day donation to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. The donation will come from the city’s general fund.

Trumbull County Emergency Management and the Trumbull County Local Emergency Planning Committee will be conducting a full-scale exercise at 10 a.m. today at the county vehicle maintenance garage on Panther Avenue.
The exercise will be a simulation of a gasoline spill at the county vehicle maintenance lot.

Bestiality legislation
WARREN
City council gave first reading to legislation outlawing bestiality Wednesday after a Boardman man provided the city with a model bestiality ordinance recently and urged the city to approve it.
Bestiality – sex with animals – is legal in Ohio and 10 other states, but after a local case involving a Warren man charged with cruelty to animals for having sex with two dogs, Jason Cooke of Boardman hired an attorney to write a model ordinance for Warren and other municipalities to consider adopting.
Councilman John Brown said the law department made relatively few changes to the proposed ordinance.
It will be discussed in committee later this month and probably will get three readings before it comes to council for a final vote.
State superintendent
COLUMBUS
A former adviser to Republican and Democratic governors has been named Ohio’s new state superintendent in a striking unanimous vote by the state board of education.
The 19-0 vote Wednesday for Paolo DeMaria was characterized as the start of a new era of cooperation for the often fractious board. After the vote, the board welcomed DeMaria with a standing ovation.
DeMaria becomes the permanent replacement for former superintendent Richard Ross, who retired Dec. 31.
