Mahoning commissioners recognize poster contest winners
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners this morning recognized the winners of the county recycling division’s annual Earth Day poster contest. The first place winners, their schools and grades are: Delaney Ankeles, Holy Family, first grade; Matthew Steiner, West Boulevard Elementary, second grade; Isabel Klisiewics, West Boulevard Elementary, third grade; Zoe LaRosa, Stadium Drive Elementary, fourth grade; Makiah Kutz, West Branch Middle, fifth grade; Gwen Lamp, West Branch Middle, sixth grade; Lucia Naples, Holy Family, seventh grade; Haley Jones, West Branch Middle, eighth grade.
The recycling division has announced several major recycling collections will occur this month.
A tire recycling drive will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.
The first 10 passenger-car tires per car will be accepted free of charge. The charge will be $2 per passenger-car tire thereafter.
Light truck and semi tires will be accepted for a fee, varying according to their size and weight.
Also, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the same location, there will be a household appliance recycling drive with no charge for refrigerant removal.
From 9 a.m. to noon that day, a paper shredding event will be at Shepherd of the Valley, 301 W. Western Reserve Road, Poland. Participants may bring up to five banker’s boxes of papers to be shredded free of charge.
On May 21, an electronics recycling drive will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Covelli Centre; and a household hazardous waste collection will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canfield Fairgrounds.
The commissioners’ next meeting will be at 10 a.m. May 20 in the county courthouse basement – a day later than their usual meeting time.
