YSU players named All-Horizon League

Indianapolis

Senior Miranda Castiglione and sophomore Cali Mikovich were named to the All-Horizon League first team while junior Sarah Dowd earned second-team honors and Paige Geanangel was named to the All-Freshman Team, the Horizon League announced Tuesday.

Castiglione, the 2014 Horizon League Co-Player of the Year and a first-team choice in 2015, is the first player in school history to earn first-team all-league honors three times.

Castiglione, who finished in the top four in 11 different Horizon League statistical categories, led the league in doubles (16), total bases (114) and runs scored (53) and finished second in batting average (.439), slugging percentage (.820), on-base percentage (.544) and RBIs (47). She also tied for third in home runs (11) and was fourth in hits (61) and stolen bases (22). Castiglione set YSU single-season runs and RBI records in 2016.

Mikovich, who was named to the All-Freshman Team in 2015, broke the YSU single-season home run record with 12 and batted .389 with 39 RBIs, 50 runs scored and 14 stolen bases.

Mikovich tied for the Horizon League lead with 65 hits, ranked second home runs, 112 total bases and runs scored, third with a .389 batting average and a .671 slugging percentage.

Dowd batted .307 with 11 home runs and drove in 35 runs while scoring 40 times. She became the first player in school history with 10 or more home runs in multiple seasons and YSU’s career leader with four grand slams.

Geanangel led the Penguins and ranked third in the Horizon League in victories with 16. She became the first YSU freshman pitcher since 2003 with 16 wins.

YSU baseball team falls in rain-shortened game

PITTSBURGH

The Youngstown State baseball team began a busy week by losing 5-3 at Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening in a game that was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to rain.

The Penguins, who are scheduled to play five more games this week, trailed the Panthers 5-0 before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. The rain delay began in the bottom of the fifth and lasted a little over 45 minutes before the remainder of the game was canceled.

Alex Larivee had one of three hits for YSU, an RBI single in the three-run fifth. Lorenzo Arcuri also singled, and Billy Salem doubled for the Penguins.

YSU will be back on the road at 3 p.m. today at Bowling Green.

Bengals’ Burfect, Jones will be soccer captains

CINCINNATI

The Bengals players who led their playoff meltdown against the Steelers are trying to transfer the edgy rivalry to soccer.

Suspended linebacker Vontaze Burfict and cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones are among seven Bengals players who will be honorary captains for FC Cincinnati’s game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the United Soccer League. The game will be played at the University of Cincinnati.

Burfict drew a three-game suspension after hitting Steelers receiver Antonio Brown in the head in the closing seconds. Jones then was penalized for bumping an official, moving Pittsburgh in range for the winning field goal in their first-round game at Paul Brown Stadium last season.

DETROIT
