One charged after high-speed chase

City police charged a juvenile driving a stolen car with unauthorized use of a vehicle and fleeing and eluding after a high-speed chase through several streets on the city’s East Side early Sunday .
The driver and two other juveniles in the vehicle were taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.
The chase began about 8:30 a.m. when officers en route to a call saw a vehicle going south on Garland Avenue at high speed. Officers tried to stop the vehicle at Oak and Truesdale avenues, but the driver, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, increased his speed.
The driver fled in a large circle including Rigby Street, Jackson Street, Oak and Forest avenues where the occupants left the vehicle and were apprehended after a short foot chase, police said.
During the car chase, the driver went through red lights at Oak and Truesdale and Jackson at Himrod avenues, according to police.

Youngstown State University will be the site of a large-scale emergency-response exercise involving dozens of federal, state and local first-responders Tuesday and Thursday. The training will focus on preparedness for a terrorist attack, possibly including weapons of mass destruction that involve mass casualties. There will be a significant presence of emergency vehicles and uniformed first-responders largely in the areas of Moser Hall on Tuesday and Bliss Hall on Thursday.

Tuesday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Moser Hall, including Schwebel Auditorium; Lincoln Avenue on the south side of Moser Hall, between Fifth Avenue and Elm Street; and the F2 parking lot along Fifth Avenue next to Beeghly Hall. The exercise is expected to include up to 100 participants.
Thursday, May 12, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Three rooms in Bliss Hall; the parking lot along Audubon Street behind University Courtyard Apartments in Smoky Hollow; and Harrison Field in Smoky Hollow. There will be up to 50 participants.
The university will remain open. Business will be conducted as usual. The training focuses on preparedness for a terrorist attack, possibly including weapons of mass destruction that involves mass casualties.
