Morales wins title at HL outdoors

The Youngstown State men’s track and field team has built a 25-point lead while the women are tied with Milwaukee after the second day of competition at the Horizon League Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

Winning Horizon League titles on Saturday were Arnaldo Morales (high jump), Jaynee Corbett (discus) and Chontel Fils (long jump). Morales won his third consecutive outdoor high jump crown clearing a Horizon League record height of 2.15m. Morales cleared the height on his second attempt and was able to defeat Milwaukee’s Brett Pozolinski. It was the second time this year that Morales cleared the school-record height.

Corbett picked up her second title of the meet winning the discus with a toss of 45.52m. Corbett is the first Penguin since Alison Roth in 2012 to win the discus.

Fils, a freshman, had a strong Horizon League Championships debut winning the long jump with a distance of 5.79m. She becomes the third Penguin to win the outdoor long jump crown joining Grambling and Alisha Anthony.

The men have 99 points after the first two days while Milwaukee is in second with 74 and Valparaiso is third with 68. The women are tied with the Panthers as both teams have 71 points.

In the 200m, the women qualified three of the top four runners. Burts had a time of 24.78 seconds, Grambling posted a time of 24.90 seconds and Powell fourth at 24.98 seconds.

Jennifer Shiley had the top qualifying time in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.96 while McDonald had the fourth-best time of 1:03.87.

In the 200m, Antonio had the best qualifying time at 21.10 seconds while Carl Zallow was third at 21.76 seconds. In the 110m hurdles, Chad Zallow qualified second in the event with a time of 15.04 seconds.
