Mr., Mrs. Pacalo celebrate 60 years of marriage


A family celebration at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Pacalo in North Lima marked 60 years of marriage for the couple.

Their children are Nick Jr. and Kathy Pacalo of Richmond, Va.; Patrick Pacalo of Boardman; Jack and Eileen Pacalo of Pittsburgh; and Carla Pacalo of Burke, Va. Three grandchildren complete the family.

The former Rose Italiano married Mr. Pacalo on Dec. 26, 1955, at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown.

The Pacalos are members of Holy Family Church in Poland, where Mrs. Pacalo volunteers.

Mrs. Pacalo, a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in medical technology, worked at St. Elizabeth and Southside hospitals in Youngstown, as well as numerous hospitals around the country. She was also a teacher at Holy Family School. She retired in 2007.

Mr. Pacalo graduated from Kent State University, earned a master’s degree at the University of Southern California and did doctoral studies at the University of West Virginia. He is a U.S. Navy veteran, serving as an officer and naval aviator for 25 years, including flights in Vietnam. He was appointed by the Navy as representative to the International Civil Aeronautical Organization, was a presidential appointee to the National Transportation Safety Board.

Mr. Pacalo is a certified safety professional and is a member of the International Society of Air Safety Investigators.

He formed his own consulting firm where he provided safety consulting to many national companies.

After his naval service, he was a professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and was honored by the University Board of Governors following his retirement with the title professor emeritus for life. He was a visiting professor at Keene State College until retiring in 2007, and was also a guest lecturer at the OSHA Training Institute for 18 years.

He is active in many civic and military organizations, and was a Scoutmaster and member of local councils.
