YSU junior dies tonight at rec center

YSU student Eric Stone died tonight after collapsing while playing basketball in the university’s Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center.

Stone was a junior majoring in electrical engineering. He is a Calcutta native who was living in Newton Falls.

In a statement issued just after 10:30 p.m., university spokesman Ron Cole said Stone was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Cole said Stone was a resident of Youngstown State’s Weller House, had a 4.0 grade point average and was president of the YSU chapter of the IEEE, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire YSU community are with Eric’s loving family and friends, Cole said in the statement.

He added that student counseling is available at University Counseling Services, and counseling assistance for employees also is available.
