The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Planning Committee of Mahoning Valley will host a program on “Institutionalized Racism – Remembering What is Civil, Doing What is Right” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave.
Discussion will focus on racism in education, entrepreneurship and criminal justice.
‘Mutt Mingle’ planned
BOARDMAN
Boardman Park and the Animal Charity Humane Society will host “Star Paws Mutt Mingle” from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Masters Outdoor Pavilion in the park.
The free event will feature dog vendors, nonprofit dog- rescue organizations, local veterinarians who can answer questions and a chance to socialize with other dog owners. Food concessions also will be available.
Proceeds will benefit Animal Charity and Paws Town.
Bring your dog dressed in a “Star Wars” costume for a chance to win a prize.
Visitors that day also can visit Paws Town Dog Park from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Applications for a yearly Paws Town membership will be available with a $5 discount. Members can refer friends for a chance to win prizes.
Flag disposal
During May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired and delivering them to a local veterans organization for proper disposal.
Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corporate office at 5525 Silica Road, Austintown.
Shepherd of the Valley communities are: 7148 West Blvd., Boardman; 4100 North River Road NE, Howland; 1500 McKinley Ave., Niles; and 301 W. Western Reserve Road, Poland.
State road cleanup
YOUNGSTOWN
City and Mahoning County litter-control and recycling officials are partnering with the Ohio Department of Transportation for a state roadway cleanup Saturday.
Volunteers should meet at 8 a.m. at the Covelli Centre downtown to register and pick up cleanup supplies, including free garbage bags, litter pickers and gloves, before driving to cleanup sites to work from 9 a.m. to noon.
Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office day-reporting inmates also will participate.
Photo contest
WARREN
The Trumbull County MetroParks and county Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct four photo contests this year.
Photos will be accepted from June 1 until 2 p.m. Aug. 31 for the summer contest. Rules and regulations are available at www.trumbullmetroparks.org.
Photos should be emailed to Zachary.svette@trumbullmetroparks.org.
The email must say what park is pictured and the date the photo was taken. Winning photos will be published on the MetroParks website.
