Grandson held in man’s fatal shooting
LIBERTY
A Liberty Township man is expected to be arraigned in Girard Municipal Court today on a murder charge in the death of his grandfather in their Lucretia Drive home Sunday afternoon.
Liberty Police Chief Richard Tisone said Brandon D. Cagley, 30, surrendered to police at the scene of the shooting, and after being interviewed at the Liberty Police Department, he was incarcerated in Trumbull County Jail. The victim is James W. Phillips, 81, of 1780 Lucretia Drive, Liberty.
Based on the evidence at the scene and the interview, Tisone said Cagley will be charged with some type of felony murder.
The suspected weapon, a .38-caliber revolver, was recovered by police at the scene, Tisone said.
The Trumbull County 911 Center received several calls about the shooting beginning at 3:49 p.m.
One caller said a male had been shot, that his grandson, Brandon Cagley had shot him, and that the gun was in the bedroom on the bed.
Another call was from a man identified as Cagley who said he shot his grandfather in the chest to protect his grandmother. The victim’s wife also called and said her grandson had shot her husband because her husband was going to beat her.
Tisone said police were interviewing witnesses Sunday and that the investigation is continuing.
The Trumbull County coroner and personnel from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were at the scene Sunday. As of Sunday night, the coroner had not made a ruling in the shooting, the police chief said.
Sunday’s shooting was the third homicide in Trumbull County this year.
On Jan. 17, Janelle Green, 56, of Wakefield Creek Road, Farmdale, was shot to death in the stomach in her home. Her husband, Ricky Green, 59, called 911 to report that he had shot her. He was charged with murder.
James E. Dotson Jr., 33, of Perkinswood Boulevard Southeast, Warren, and Syme Street in Masury, was found shot in the front parking lot of J&L Lounge on Highland Avenue Southwest in Warren Township at 1:57 a.m. April 4, 2016.
