CANFIELD

“I wanted to do something to keep his memory alive,” said Janice Jarvis, talking about two new Canfield High School scholarships in her son’s honor.

Jimmie Jarvis was just 25 when he died in 2014 after a motorcycle accident in 2012. He was a graduate of Canfield High School in 2007 and an esteemed bowler both there and at Youngstown State University.

Janice Jarvis thought a bowling scholarship was the perfect opportunity to memorialize her son – an avid bowler since age 3.

On Feb. 28, the Jarvis family hosted Bowling Night Out at Boardman Lanes, raising proceeds for the two scholarships the family will provide in May.

Janice Jarvis said the night brought back memories of her son in his early bowling years.

“Everyone was just having fun with one another at this family event,” she said. “I can just picture Jimmie running around Camelot Lanes, carrying on like the rest of them.”

She said the family is planning to make this an annual event to keep the scholarship funding going.

The Jarvis family is offering a $500 scholarship to a Canfield senior student on the bowling team, toward any school of his or her choosing.

Janice Jarvis also put together a scholarship to her son’s undergraduate alma mater, YSU. It also is a $500 scholarship for a student in good academic standing, who plans to go into the STEM program – following in Jimmie Jarvis’ footsteps.

Applications for the scholarships are available in the guidance office at the high school. Students are to write 500-word essays on topics relating to the scholarship for which they apply.

“This is such a good way of giving back to our schools that he graduated from,” she said. “He would be really excited, I think.”
