Boardman police investigate phone fraud

BOARDMAN — Township police handled a reported case of telecommunications fraud Wednesday in which an unknown suspect purportedly attempted to scam an 83-year-old victim out of $1,500.

According to a police report, a Buchanan Drive resident told police she received a call that day from a man who claimed to be her grandson. The man reportedly told her he needed her to send $1,500 for legal expenses after getting a drunk-driving infraction while in New York.

Another person claiming to be a lawyer also reportedly talked to her during the call.

The victim reportedly refused to send money, then called her grandson to confirm that he was not the person who had called her.
