Pilot charged with being drunk before flight from Detroit

DETROIT

A 50-year-old American Airlines co-pilot who was grounded on suspicion of drunkenness at an airport near Detroit has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office said John Maguire was charged Monday with the misdemeanor stemming from a Saturday morning incident at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Maguire, who authorities say lives in Pennsylvania, is suspected of having a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit.

He was detained and held from a scheduled flight from Detroit to Philadelphia that was canceled.

Maguire was released pending an arraignment, which hasn’t been scheduled. Prosecutor’s office spokeswoman Maria Miller said no attorney has been listed for him.

Airlines officials have said they are assisting investigators.

Police: Robber outed himself, left wallet with ID on scene

PANAMA CITY, Fla.

Investigators said a robber helped them out when he apparently dropped his own wallet with his identification in it as he and two accomplices tried to take money from men outside a Florida Panhandle bar.

Twenty-eight-year-old Devonte Levoris Pace was arrested in Panama City after the armed robberies Jan. 16.

The News Herald reported that Pace and two other suspected robbers were captured on surveillance video robbing the men, who were in a vehicle outside the bar.

According to Panama City police reports, the trio walked up to the men, pulled a gun and demanded their wallets. About $600 in cash was stolen. The wallet left behind helped police arrest Pace.

Baby seal found 4 miles from water in San Francisco Bay Area

FREMONT, Calif.

Authorities said a baby seal made it 4 miles from the water to the front yard of a home in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Rescuers nicknamed the seal Ozzie after she was found on Osgood Road in Fremont. The female northern fur seal had no visible signs of injury and was taken to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

The 9-month-old seal has been rescued before. Center staff members said the pup was found malnourished last November at New Brighton State Beach in Capitola.

She was treated and released earlier this month in Bodega Bay, which is about 100 miles northwest from where the animal was found in Fremont.

They said the seal should have headed north to Alaska but lost her way and headed south.
