Freshman Paige Geanangel fired a two-hit shutout to lead the Youngstown State softball team to a 3-0 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday at the YSU Softball Field.

The Penguins (13-11, 2-0 Horizon League) have won six straight after sweeping the Crusaders (3-20, 0-3).

Geanangel (5-5), who struck out two, posted her fourth straight win. She allowed a single in the first and one in the seventh. Only one Crusader reached third base.

The Penguins scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning and that was all of the offense Geanangel would need. Sarah Dowd, Cali Mikovich and Miranda Castiglione each singled to load the bases and Alex Gibson plated Dowd and Mikovich with a two-run single up the middle.

Stevie Taylor‘s sacrifice fly to left field scored Castiglione with the Penguins’ last run.

Valparaiso’s Mollie Lindeman pitched five scoreless innings of relief, allowed just two hits and forced the Penguins to strand six runners over the final five innings.

Mikovich led the Penguins with two hits and had a stolen base.
