The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center’s Robotics Team is heading to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the 2016 Vex World’s Robotics Competition on April 20-23.

They are one of 450 teams to qualify worldwide for the event. About 16,000 teams compete for one of the spots.

They competed recently for the spot at the Vex Ohio State Tournament. They finished the qualifier rounds in 21st place and then aligned with Bellefontaine High School and Akron Firestone High School to compete in the round-robin-style tournament for the invitations to the world competition.

The alliance took first place for the tournament entering as a No. 3 seed.

”I am really proud of these students and impressed with their hard work and determination,” said Walter Baber, engineering and Project Lead the Way instructor. “In a competition that takes months to perfect a robot, they decided one week prior to the competition that they needed to go a completely different direction with their robot if they wanted to perform well at state. In that week, they worked hard and finished their robot the morning of the competition but were able to compete with the best that Ohio had to offer.”
