Penguins swept in doubleheader
NILES
The Youngstown State baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Milwaukee on Saturday at Eastwood Field. The Penguins lost the first game 1-0 and the nightcap 22-3.
Game one featured a pitcher’s duel between YSU’s Jeremy Quinlan and UWM’s Jay Peters.
Quinlan had a no-hitter for 6 2/3 innings before a sharp single up the middle by Luke Meeteer broke up the no-hit bid. He struck out a career-high eight batters in a stellar eight innings of work. Quinlan (1-3) allowed just three hits, two of which came in the eighth inning, while walking just one on 121 pitches.
The Panthers scored in the top of the eighth as Quinlan had some tough luck. With one out, Cole Heili hit a ball off the end of the bat that was just out of the reach of Billy Salem at second base. The ball rolled into short right field and Heili hustled to second for a double. On a full count, the next batter, Mike Jordahl hit a seeing-eye single up the middle scoring Heili from second with what turned out to be the game’s lone run.
In the ninth, YSU (5-15, 0-6 Horizon League) threatened with two outs. Back-to-back singles by Andrew Kendrick and Kyle Benyo put the tying run at second base. But UWM reliever Jake Tuttle came in for Peters and got Trey Bridis to ground out to third ending the game.
In game two, the Panthers scored five runs in the first to take control. UWM (10-11, 3-0) scored five more times in the second, twice in the third, once in the fourth, five times in the fifth and four more in the ninth for its final total on 24 hits.
