College hockey referee dies after fall on ice

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.

A college hockey referee who fell during pregame warmups in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has died.

Mousseau struck his head on the ice on March 18 at Van Andel Arena. He was to have worked a semifinal game between Michigan Tech and Ferris State.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

Federer’s return delayed by virus

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla.

Roger Federer’s return from knee surgery has been delayed by a stomach virus.

Federer was scheduled to play Friday for the first time in nearly two months at the Miami Open, but he withdrew shortly before the match because of the illness, which he has been battling for several days.

Federer has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic surgery Feb. 3 to repair torn cartilage in his left knee. The 2005-06 Key Biscayne champion hasn’t played in the tournament since 2014.

Federer was replaced in the draw by lucky loser Horacio Zeballos, who faced Juan Martin del Potro in the second round.

Lake Placid may be in Quebec’s 2026 bid

MIAMI

Lake Placid is more than willing to be part of Quebec City’s exploration of a possible bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics, the mayor of the upstate New York village said Friday.

In a statement, Lake Placid Mayor Craig Randall said Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume reached out this week and asked if the village would like to be included in the consideration process.

“I was flattered that Mayor Labeaume reached out to Lake Placid and I told him to please keep Lake Placid included in his investigation for possible venue use in an Olympic bid,” Randall said in his statement, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

Labeaume is scheduled to meet with International Olympic Committee officials at their office in Lausanne, Switzerland, in April.

Lake Placid hosted the Winter Games in 1932 and 1980. Other cities that Quebec City would look to align with are Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta, Randall said.

The IOC is encouraging future Olympic bids to re-use existing facilities in an effort to minimize cost. For example, Lake Placid has an internationally certified sliding track for bobsled, skeleton and luge at Mount Van Hoevenberg. Quebec lacks such a facility.

US ties Colombia in Olympic playoff 1st leg

BARRANQUILLA, COLOMBIA

Luis Gil scored in the fifth minute, and the United States held on for a 1-1 tie against Colombia at Barranquilla on Friday in the opener of a two-leg playoff for the final berth in this year’s men’s Olympic soccer tournament.

In the matchup of under-23 teams. Colombia had 76 percent possession in the first half but didn’t break through until Juan Quintero tied it with a penalty kick in the 68th.

The second leg of the total-goals series is Tuesday at Frisco, Texas. The U.S. is in danger of failing to qualify for consecutive Olympics for the first time since 1960-68; it was forced into the playoff by losing to Honduras last October in the semifinal round of regional qualifying.
