Driver of truck that crashed dies

YOUNGSTOWN

The driver of a truck that was hit from the side on state Route 82 in Brookfield Township on Feb. 24 has died.

Wayne R. Ayers, 56, of West Middlesex, Pa., died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Select Specialty Care from complications of injuries he suffered in the crash, his obituary says.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Ayers was westbound on Route 82 in a semi tractor-trailer when a box truck pulled out from Warner Road, failing to yield the right of way and striking Ayers’ truck, causing the accident.

The driver of the box truck, Robert Arms, 38, of Tarentum, Pa.; and his passenger, Michael George, 41, also of Tarentum; were seriously injured and taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Student charged with posting threats

Township police arrested a West Branch High School student on charges of posting threats to the school district on Facebook.

According to a police report, on Wednesday evening the department received multiple phone calls in reference to a student making the following threats on Facebook: “I’m going to shoot the school up” and “I’m going to kill everyone.”

The student, whose name police did not release, faces charges of aggravated menacing and inducing panic. He was taken to Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center and will be arraigned at 3 p.m. today in juvenile court.

3 Calif. men face felony charges

Three California men face felony charges after purportedly attempting to sell fake gold jewelry to area pawn shops.

Jorge Avalos, 20, is charged with felony theft by deception, felony criminal simulation and misdemeanor attempted theft by deception. Otto Alvarez, 29, is charged with felony counts of complicity and possession of criminal tools. Axel Munoz, 32, is charged with felony complicity, felony possession of criminal tools and misdemeanor obstructing official business.

The charges stem from an incident reported Wednesday at Ace Diamond on Market Street. According to a police report, the suspects attempted to pass off fake gold chains as real, but the owner caught on to the scam because of an email warning he had received.

The charges also are connected to an incident Tuesday at Tele Gold Jewelers on Market Street in which the store reportedly paid $450 to Avalos for two necklaces that later were determined to be part of the scam.
