METRO DIGEST || Niles’ gain is Warren’s loss

Warren’s loss

WARREN

There will be unintended consequences for Warren government resulting from the increase in revenue for Niles.

Because of the 0.5 percent increase in the Niles income-tax rate approved by Niles voters at the March 15 election, Warren will lose $50,000 to $70,000 of its income tax annually, Treasurer John Homlitas reported at Wednesday’s Warren City Council meeting.

The reason is that Niles and Warren will now both have an income tax of 2 percent, so those people who live in Warren but work in Niles will no longer pay a half-percent income tax to Warren, Homlitas said.

That will be a loss of about $25,000 to $35,000 in 2016 because Niles will start collecting its extra half-percent income tax mid-year, Homlitas said.

Buses received

CANFIELD

Canfield School District is spending $253,000 on various items. Treasurer Patricia Kenner said at Wednesday’s meeting she’s happy to announce Myers Equipment Corp. of Akron-Canfield Road finally sent the two school buses Canfield ordered. The buses, costing $174,000, are currently in use. Canfield administrators made the final payment of $41,000 for the sound system from Custom Integrated Solutions, and two Dell computer orders of $19,000 each were placed to replace one middle school and one high school computer lab.
