Benyo’s homer lifts Penguins OVER OHIO UNIVERSITY

ATHENS

Kyle Benyo’s first career home run capped a three-run eighth inning that helped the YSU baseball team beat Ohio 8-5 on Tuesday at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens. The Penguins led 3-0 after an inning and held a 4-2 advantage before Ohio scored three runs in the seventh to take its first lead of the game at 5-4. Billy Salem doubled and scored to tie the game in the eighth, and Benyo’s two-out homer to left proved to be the game-winning hit. YSU added an insurance run in the ninth for the final tally. Salem went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs, and three other Penguins had one hit. YSU starter Michael Semonsen surrendered two runs in 12/3 innings, and Joel Hake pitched 31/3 scoreless innings of relief. Kevin Yarabinec came on and allowed the Bobcats’ go-ahead hit in the seventh, but he allowed just one more hit and did not have a run go on his record in 22/3 innings. YSU will open its home schedule on Friday at 3 p.m. against Milwaukee at Eastwood Field.

Hitting barrage leads to softball split

AKRON

YSU banged out 15 hits en route to a 11-8 win over Akron in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Lee R. Jackson Softball Field. The Penguins dropped game one, 8-0, in five innings. With the split, the Penguins improve to 8-11 overall while Akron improve to 14-13 overall. In the nightcap, junior Katie Smallcomb went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs batted in while Sarah Dowd, Cali Mikovich, Miranda Castiglione and Hannah Lucas each collected two hits. Mikovich posted a triple and a home run with two RBIs while Dowd also tripled. Freshman Paige Genanangle notched her second win of the year tossing six innings of relief and striking out two. The Penguins trailed 4-0 after one inning, but sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the second to score eight runs. YSU visits St. Bonaventure in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. today.
