Funds, contract OK’d for prison fencing

COLUMBUS

The State Controlling Board has approved $308,500 and a contract with Schorr Architects Inc. in suburban Columbus for design services related to prison fences, including the Trumbull Correctional Institution near Leavittsburg.

According to documents, state prison officials want “to install nonlethal electric fencing to increase security at these facilities. Representatives have visited state prisons in Indiana and the federal prison located in Kentucky. Electric fences are currently in use in those facilities and serve as a deterrent to attempted escape or illegal activity around the fence.” Lawmakers earlier approved electric fences at two other Ohio prisons.

Facing a DUI charge

LIBERTY

A man faces charges of driving under the influence after police purportedly found him sleeping in a car in the middle of the road early Sunday.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Ravine Drive about 2:45 a.m. and found Edward Murray, 40, of Youngstown slumped over the wheel, according to a police report.

When police arrived, the car was in the drive position with Murray’s foot on the brake, the report states.

Police reported waking Murray after putting the car in park. He declined to take a blood-alcohol content test, but he smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and had difficulty keeping his balance, police said.

Murray’s vehicle was towed, and he also received a citation involving impeding traffic.
