St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is among 35 Ohio hospitals recognized by the Ohio Hospital Association for their participation in the OHA Energy Cup initiative that resulted in the reduction of energy consumption and limited greenhouse gas emissions saving a combined $7.5 million in operating cost savings in 2015.

St. Elizabeth Youngstown was also one of several hospitals meeting or exceeding the goal of reducing 2 percent energy consumption from 2014 to 2015.

The Ohio Hospital Association’s 2015 Energy Cup participants were able to opt-in by submitting energy use information from 2014, then race to reduce energy use and consumption as much as possible during 2015. The goal is for every competitor to reduce consumption by 2 percent from 2014 to 2015.

Herbology classes

YOUNGSTOWN

Local naturopath, Dr. Dannielle MacDuff, is offering herbology classes, beginning April 28, at ITT Tech, 1030 N. Meridian Road. Class dates are April 28, May 5, 12, 19. Topics include uses and identification of herbs, hands-on remedy making, and when using herbals is appropriate.

Blood screenings

The Salem Regional Medical Center’s Laboratory Services and North Lima Care Center are offering comprehensive blood screening on April 23 by appointment only at the North Lima Care Center, 11993 South Ave. Call 330-549-9680 for information and an appointment.

Comprehensive blood screenings can help to identify many health problems in their earliest stages, when they are most treatable, and may detect conditions such as high cholesterol, anemia and other disorders. The cost is $40.

Participants may add a prostate specific antigen screening to their comprehensive panel for an additional $10; or an HgA1C diabetes screening for an additional $25. A lipid profile only, which measures cholesterol levels and is included in the comprehensive screening, is also available for $10.

The Sharon Regional Health System is offering physicals for student athletes and student drivers through its Corporate Health Services, 295 N. Kerrwood Drive. Students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and all PIAA or OHSAA physical packets much be completed before an appointment.

Seeking volunteers

SHARON, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System, 740 E. State St., is seeking adult and teen volunteers. The hospital is conducting interviews by appointment from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday. Those interested may call 724-983-3805 for an appointment with a volunteer coordinator to discuss opportunities available.

Hospice training sessions offered

NILES

Hospice of the Valley is conducting training sessions for new companion volunteers to visit hospice patients in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties. Sessions are from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 5 through May 3, at St. Joe’s at the Mall, Sears Concourse Eastwood Mall, 5555 Youngstown-Warren Road.
