Police find burglary suspect asleep on couch

Staff report

Boardman

Police responded to an attempted burglary at an apartment on Vineland Place at 9 p.m. Sunday.

According to a police report, the 26-year old female resident said she answered a knock at the door and upon opening it, a man, later identified as Boardman resident Jonathan Wetzel, 24, pushed the door open and entered her apartment, pushing her aside and closing the door behind him

A 27-year-old man in the apartment with the woman said he approached Wetzel, asking him what he was doing, to which Wetzel didn’t respond. The man then “bear-hugged” Wetzel, forcing him out of the apartment, and called 911.

When police arrived, the woman said she believed Wetzel was at the apartment below her. When police checked out her story, they found Wetzel lying on another tenant’s couch.

Police said Wetzel initially was unresponsive to verbal commands and appeared intoxicated.

Police charged Wetzel with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct with intoxication. After processing, police released him to his father’s custody and issued a summons for him to appear at 8:30 a.m. today in Mahoning County Area Court.
