BOARDMAN

The school district will participate in the United Way’s Success by Six program for four weeks this summer.

The pre-kindergarten readiness program geared toward children who need a boost before they officially start school will be offered at Boardman’s four elementary schools.

The program is intended to prepare students for their academic careers and also focuses on their social/emotional development. Among other things, it provides them with the opportunity to become familiar with the school building, to develop a relationship with the kindergarten teacher, and to learn to adhere to classroom structure.

There is no cost to the district for to participate in the program. It’s funded through Title I federal funds and by United Way of Youngstown and the MahoningValley, schools Superintendent Frank Lazzeri said at the board’s meeting Monday.

A minimum of 60 Boardman students will participate, Lazzerri added. The program will take place the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August.

The Parent Teacher Association’s annual Safety Village will take place the last day of the program, Aug. 11. The children will learn about topics such as bus and fire safety.

Students chosen for the program may have limited or no preschool experience or have been identified through the kindergarten registration process as potentially benefiting from the program.
