Regional juried show opens at the Butler

YOUNGSTOWN
The Butler Institute of American Art’s 78th Area Artists Annual exhibition opens today and runs through April 17 in the MacIntosh and Hynes-Finnegan galleries, located on the second level.
Works by artists in all media who live in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties in Ohio, as well as Mercer and Lawrence counties in Pennsylvania, were eligible for the juried show.
H. Anderson Turner III, art writer for the Akron Beacon Journal and director of the Kent State University art gallery, was the juror of this year’s show.
A total of 251 entries were submitted by 139 area artists for this year’s competition. Turner selected 88 of those entries by 59 artists. Nine of the works accepted were first-time entries.
The winners of the top prizes are:
Best in Show: Allen Charles Orr, Youngstown
First Prize: Guy Shively, Austintown
Second Prize: Eric Alleman, Youngstown
Third Prize: James O’Malley, Struthers
Robert Yalch Memorial Award: Jeffrey Piper, Youngstown
Juror’s Special Mention: Carole Gallo, Girard
Honorable Mention: Diane Beatty (Campbell); Lori Caldwell (West Farmington); John Fire (Austintown); Tom Harwood (Niles); Michele Perelman (New Castle, PA); L.P. Snowe II (Warren); Cynthia Tackett (Boardman); and Ian Wade (Kinsman).
The Butler Institute is located at 524 Wick Ave. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.
