CLASS A BOYS FINAL

Kennedy Catholic 71, Math, Civics and Sciences 60

HERSHEY, PA.

Mali native Sagaba Konate scored 17 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as Kennedy Catholic beat Math, Civics and Sciences Charter School to win the PIAA Class A state title.

The win gives Kennedy (28-2) seven state titles and coach Rick Mancino his first as a head coach. Mancino, a Youngstown State graduate, was part of Kennedy’s first state championship team in 1986.

Jason Austin and Drew Magestro put up 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the winning side. Malik Archer led the Mighty Elephants (16-15) with 21 points.

MCSCS had a 13-12 lead with less than two minutes left in the first quarter, but trailed through the rest of the contest.

OHIO

DIVISION I SEMIFINALS

Westerville South 87, Garfield Heights 78

COLUMBUS

Four Wildcats players scored in double figures as Westerville South never trailed against Garfield Heights.

Jordan Humphery led Westerville South with 25 points Ohio State commit Kaleb Wesson had a double double of 14 points and 13 rebounds and also putting up a double double was Andrew Wesson with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ennis Thomas rounded out the quartet with 13 points.

Garfield Heights made a state semifinal record 13 threes in defeat. Youngstown State commit Braun Hartfield came off the bench to make five of those record 3s in a 27-point performance.

Willie Jackson added 19 points for the Bulldogs and Marreon Jackson put up 12.

Lima Senior 61, Wilmington 58

COLUMBUS

Xavier Simpson scored 23 points and Lima Senior had to withstand a late rally to beat Wilmington in a Division I state semifinal.

The Spartans (29-0) will play the Westerville South tonight for their first title.

Wilmington (27-2) trailed by 20 early in the third quarter but pulled to within the final margin with 8.8 seconds left on three foul shots from Jarron Cumberland. Cumberland had 25 points, including 12 of 17 from the foul line.

Simpson, the 2016 Associated Press Mr. Basketball and a Michigan commit, missed two free throws with 6.3 seconds left.

Cumberland, runner-up in the Mr. Basketball voting, got the rebound but missed a 3-pointer from 24 feet at the buzzer.

DIVISION IV SEMIFINALS

Van Wert Lincolnview 52, Jackson Center 39

COLUMBUS

Chandler Adams had 14 points to lead Van Wert Lincolnview to a win against Jackson Center in a Division IV state semifinal Friday.

Lincolnview (27-1) will play Willoughby Cornerstone Christian at 10:45 a.m. today as it seeks its second title. Lincolnview’s first came in 1997.

Trevor Neate had 12 points, Austin Leeth had 10 and Derek Youtsey had nine for the Lancers. The team outscored Jackson Center 20-9 in the fourth quarter.

Brady Wildermuth had 20 points for Jackson Center (24-5).

Cornerstone Christian 73, Columbus Wellington 67

COLUMBUS

Michael Bothwell had 30 points and 10 rebounds and Brandon McQueen scored 20 points as Willoughby Cornerstone Christian defeated Columbus Wellington in a Division IV state semifinal.

The Patriots (16-12), in their first state tournament, play either Van Wert Lincolnview or Jackson Center for the championship on Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

Bothwell’s layup with 2:12 left in the game tied the score at 66. McQueen scored off a turnover and added a free throw with 1:02 remaining to put the Patriots up 69-66.

Wellington (24-4) missed its final six field goal attempts and scored one point in the final 2:56 after leading 66-62.

Dustin Harder had 21 points and Cameron Edmondson 16 for Wellington, who trailed 40-33 at halftime.
