Drone comes close to jet near LAX

LOS ANGELES

A drone came within 200 feet of hitting a Lufthansa jet near Los Angeles International Airport on Friday – the latest run-in between aircraft and the increasingly popular unmanned fliers.

The pilot of a Lufthansa A380 approaching the airport reported that a drone passed overhead about 1:30 p.m., said Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane was flying at 5,000 feet and was about 14 miles east of the runway. It landed safely.

8 sailors injured

NORFOLK, Va.

Eight sailors were injured Friday aboard the Norfolk-based aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower during an aircraft landing off Virginia’s coast, the Navy said.

All eight were in stable condition and none had life-threatening injuries, Cmdr. Mike Kafka of Naval Air Force Atlantic said in a news release.

Six were taken by helicopter to hospitals in Norfolk and Portsmouth, Kafka said. Two were treated on board the Eisenhower.

The sailors were working on the flight deck at the time of the accident. Kafka said they were injured when an arresting gear parted during a routine landing by an E-2C Hawkeye aircraft.

N. Korea condemned

UNITED NATIONS

The U.N. Security Council on Friday condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launches, calling them “unacceptable,” a clear violation of U.N. resolutions banning such tests, and a threat to regional and international security.

A statement from the U.N.’s most-powerful body after an urgent meeting called by the United States reiterated the council’s demand that North Korea comply with Security Council resolutions that prohibit all ballistic missile activity.

The council met hours after the North fired a medium-range missile from a site north of Pyongyang that flew about 500 miles before crashing into the sea off the country’s east coast.
