YSU women will host UMBC on Saturday

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State’s second-round opponent in the Women’s Basketball Invitational was determined Thursday night when Maryland-Baltimore County defeated Fairfield, 61-49.

Pandora Wilson led UMBC (17-13) with 26 points and eight rebounds and Taylor McCarley added 18 points. UMBC’s 19-7 second-quarter spurt was the difference in an otherwise close game againstb Fairfield (16-14).

The second-round game between YSU (20-12) and UMBC will tip off at 2 p.m. at Beeghly Center. The Penguins advanced with a 67-60 win over Stony Brook on Wednesday night.

Tickets for Saturday’s game will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the YSU Athletic Ticket Office. All tickets for the quarterfinal game are $10. Fans can also purchase tickets by phone at 330-941-1978.

Mill Creek Golf Course joins GC Amateur Tour

Mill Creek Golf Course is a new addition to the 2016 schedule for the Golf Channel Amateur Tour.

The Golf Channel Amateur Tour provides an authentic tour quality experience for players of all ages and abilities. There are active tours in 50 cities in 2016, The Mill Creek Championship is part of the Cleveland tour and will be taking place on June 11.

The event will have 12 flights, six of them senior flights. The players will be matched by age and skill set. The Mill Creek Championship is a qualifying event for the National Championship at Innisbrook Golf Resort in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

“To be added to a tour schedule that includes courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Pinehurst, and Chambers Bay is very exciting,” said Brian Tolnar, PGA Director of Golf for Mill Creek MetroParks. “I think it speaks to the work we have put in at Mill Creek Golf Course in the past year. Not only to improve the course, but to build relationships in the golf community. Our team and I are thrilled to bring this event to the Valley.”

The deadline to register for the Mill Creek Championship is June 8 and registrations should be done through www.gcamtour.com.

Canfield wrestlers win OAC championships

YOUNGSTOWN

Three Canfield wrestlers won state titles in last weekend’s Ohio Athletic Committee Junior High Championships at the Covelli Centre.

Anthony D’Alesio (146 pounds), Nick Crawford (164) and Peyton Kostelic (176) won their weight classes.

The OAC Youth Wrestling Championships will take place at the Covelli Centre this weekend.

Canfield has nine wrestlers entered in the tournament, South Range and Howland each have six, Beaver Local has five, Austintown has three and Salem, West Branch and Western Reserve each have two. Brookfield and Crestview have a representative.

Weigh-ins are tonight. Wrestling will start on Saturday at 8 a.m. with the younger divisions (5-6 & 7-8), and older divisions (11-12) will conclude around 9 p.m. Sunda’s action starts at 8 a.m. with all divisions. Semifinals are set for 12:30 p.m., and championship matches will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Reds down Indians behind Mesoraco

GOODYEAR, Ariz.

Devin Mesoraco played in his first game since hip surgery last June and homered in his only at-bat, leading the Reds to an 8-6 win over the Indians on Thursday.

Mesoraco hit one of three Reds homers off Danny Salazar. The catcher also caught Mike Napoli trying to steal during his two innings behind the plate.

Refsnyder, Castro lead Yankees over Pirates

BRADENTON, Fla.

Rob Refsnyder and Starlin Castro homered off left-hander Jeff Locke as the Yankees beat the Pirates, 7-2, on Thursday.

In the first inning, Pittburgh’s Andrew McCutchen homered onto the boardwalk beyond the left-field wall for his third home run in four games.
