The Austintown Band Parents hosted a Spaghetti Dinner on Feb. 27 at Austintown Fitch High School.

The spaghetti dinner is an annual event that has been going on for several years. The event is a fundraiser for the bands in fifth- through twelfth-grade at Austintown.

“The school does not supply the money to replace the instruments that we use, the band parents take care of all that,” said Lisa Scannell, co-chair of the dinner.

One such instrument they are looking to replace soon is a xylophone that is older than the building.

“The money is used for uniforms, instruments, we just purchased some instruments for the kids, and music stands. It costs a lot,” said Bob Pope, a band parent and chair of the spaghetti dinner. “That’s why we do these, to help out.”

Each band in fifth- through twelfth-grade puts on a performance during the dinner. The performance is free for people to come watch, but to eat a ticket must be purchased.

All of the food is made by the band parents. They come in early in the morning to start cooking and prepare enough food for 1,000 people.

Scannell and Pope said the sauce is a secret recipe only band parents know.

A bake sale, Chinese auction and cupcakes sale also occurs during the event. The odd-numbered grades donated items for the bake sale and the even-numbered grades made the cupcakes.

“Auction stuff is all donation. Cupcakes are donated by the band students,” said Pope.
