Assault after Facebook

YOUNGSTOWN

A man told police Wednesday he was robbed and beaten at about 3 a.m. after he met a woman he talked to on Facebook at a house in the first block of West Heights Avenue.

The man told police at about 5:45 p.m. the woman arranged a meeting at the home. When the man arrived, there were no lights on. The victim sat on the porch with the woman until two men came up with guns and demanded his money. When the victim said he had nothing and tried to run away, the two men hit him with their guns, tackled him and all three kicked him while they were on the ground until the woman took the victim’s cellphone and all three left.

The victim was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital before making a police report. Reports said one of his eyes was swollen shut and he had cuts and bruises on his face and forehead.

Drug charges after OD

BOARDMAN

A township woman faces a misdemeanor charge after she reportedly overdosed on drugs.

Police arrested Lori Henninger, 34, of Red Tail Hawk Court, on Wednesday on a warrant for possession of drug-abuse instruments. She was taken to the Mahoning County jail on a parole hold, according to a police report.

The charge stems from a Feb. 27 incident in which township police responded to a drug overdose reported by a family member. Henninger reportedly admitted to police she had injected herself with prescription medication. A syringe was collected as evidence.

Drugs, gun at hotel

BOARDMAN

A township man faces charges after police responded to a call Wednesday about individuals with drugs and a gun at a South Avenue hotel.

Derrick Reber, 18, is charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and a felony charge of illegal possession of a weapon, which stems from the fact he is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a felony domestic-violence conviction.

Police reportedly received photographs showing Reber holding a shotgun while sitting in a jacuzzi, and photos of suspected marijuana and cash posted by Reber.

Upon arriving at the hotel, they detained Reber and found suspected marijuana and a shotgun in his possession, according to a police report. An associate, Kelly Mohney, was cited for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Police also discovered that Reber had tried to cause damage by plugging the drain of a jacuzzi tub and leaving the water running, according to the report.

Police find gun in car

YOUNGSTOWN

Police found a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday while arresting a man on a warrant.

Reports said officers pulled over a car driven by Abham Aburahma, 21, of Trumbull Avenue in Liberty, at Belmont Avenue and Redondo Road on the North Side for an improper turn. Reports said a records check showed Aburahma had a failure-to-appear warrant from municipal court for a traffic charge.

When Aburahma was taken into custody, he told police he had a gun in the center console. Police found a Glock Model 27 pistol. Because the gun was easily accessible to Aburahma, he also was charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and booked into the Mahoning County jail. He is expected to be arraigned in municipal court today.

Diplomas for veterans

STRUTHERS

Struthers City Schools, in partnership with the Struthers Fallen Soldiers project, will award honorary diplomas to World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans who did not have the chance to complete high school due to their service.

The diplomas will be presented during the May 29 high-school graduation ceremony.

Ohio legislation, passed in 2003, authorizes school districts to award honorary high-school diplomas to veterans of those three wars or to homemakers who entered the workforce to provide for their families during those conflicts.

Veterans who attended Struthers schools or who are currently living in Struthers are eligible, but must provide school transcripts and a discharge form (DD-214) to indicate honorable service. A relative also can seek a posthumous degree on behalf of a deceased veteran.

Applications will be accepted until April 29 and are available at the board of education office, 99 Euclid Ave., or online at struthersfallensoldiers.com.

Woman bitten by dog while feeding at home

WARREN

A woman, 21, of Northwest Boulevard Northwest, lost part of her ear and suffered other serious injuries to her arm in a dog bite Monday evening.

Warren animal-control officer John Onatz interviewed her Thursday morning at home after she had been at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for several days being treated.

The woman said she was trying to feed the Shar Pei-retriever mix owned by her boyfriend’s mother that resides at her home when the dog attacked her.

The dog is being quarantined at the Northwest Boulevard home for seven days to determine whether it has rabies, Onatz said.

Onatz said there was nothing unusual about the victim feeding the dog. “I guess the dog just flipped ...,” he said. No charges were filed against the owner.
