Boardman police investigating frauds

BOARDMAN — Two township women were scammed out of more than $1,000 each in separate cases, according to police reports filed Wednesday.

One report details an incident in which a 71-year-old victim was scammed after striking up an online relationship with someone who sent her a friend request on Facebook.

The suspect reportedly told the victim he needed money so he could buy her an engagement ring and pay for a ticket to the U.S. from Nigeria. Over a 3-month span, the victim reportedly sent multiple money orders for a total loss of $1,863.

A separate report filed details an incident in which an 18-year-old victim was scammed out of $1,745.

In that case, the victim reportedly sent a money order to someone who contacted her on "Shadowshopper.com" after he sent her a check that turned out to be fake. The suspect had instructed her to keep some of the money for herself, and return the rest via money order.
