US bars drilling off Atlantic Coast

WASHINGTON

In a major reversal, the Obama administration said Tuesday it will bar oil drilling off America’s Atlantic Coast, a move cheered by environmentalists and consistent with the president’s aggressive steps to combat climate change.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said the decision “protects the Atlantic for future generations.” She said the administration had listened to thousands of people in coastal communities from Florida to New England who said, “Now is not the time to start leasing off the Atlantic Coast.”

However, business groups and most Republicans criticized it as another example of what they call executive overreach.

Police kill 1 man in Belgian raid linked to Paris attacks

BRUSSELS

Belgian and French police investigating a suspected link with the November attacks in Paris stormed a Brussels house Tuesday after being fired upon, and killed a suspect armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle, authorities said.

Three Belgian and one French police officer were slightly wounded in the operation.

“We had a lot of luck,” Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said. “It could have been a drama.”

Instagram says it will show posts in order of ‘relevance’

SAN FRANCISCO

Instagram users soon could notice something different in their feeds: Instead of showing users the most-recent posts first, the mobile photo-sharing app says it will give higher priority to posts that each user is likely to care about most.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s how Facebook decides what to show users of its online social network.

Facebook Inc., which owns Instagram, has long used a complex formula to emphasize items it hopes will be “relevant” to each user, based on factors such as whether the post came from a close friend or how the user responded to similar posts.

2nd justice resigns over email scandal

HARRISBURG, Pa.

A second Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice quit the bench Tuesday in a widening scandal over raunchy and otherwise offensive emails that he and others exchanged with friends and lawyers.

Justice Michael Eakin’s decision to retire marks the latest fallout since embattled state Attorney General Kathleen Kane began releasing hundreds of emails in 2014 to the media and ethics agencies.

Kane has since been indicted on perjury and other charges that she claims were trumped up because she took on the old boys’ club of Pennsylvania’s judiciary and law enforcement.
