Ursuline’s Parella receives Ohio honor

Three Mahoning Valley boys basketball players have been named to the Associated Press’ All-Ohio second team for Division II.
Ursuline’s Greg Parella, Niles’ Cameron Kane-Johnson and East Liverpool’s Isaac Davidson were voted to the second team.
Parella finished his high school career as Ursuline’s all-time leading scorer. Before the Division II district final on March 5 at Boardman High School, Parella trailed Tim Joyce (1,676 in 1974) by 16 points.
After a sluggish start against Poland, Parella caught fire in the second quarter, finishing with 28 points in the Irish’s 73-61 victory that secured their third consecutive district title. The previous two were in Division III.
Ursuline’s season ended five days later with a 67-52 regional semifinal loss to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Parella scored 22 points to finish with 1,410. He averaged 23.4 points in his senior season.
Kane-Johnson scored 25.4 points per game for the Red Dragons. Davidson averaged 27.3 points for the Potters.
Canfield’s Mason Mangapora was named to the special mention list.
Receiving honorable mention were: Cardinal Mooney’s Trell Thomas and Andrew Armstrong; Poland’s Matt Baker and Jared Burkert; Salem’s D.J. Pullie; and Struthers’ Andrew Carbon.
In Division III, Newton Falls’ Jaden Walton was voted to the All-Ohio third team after averaging 27.3 points.
Springfield’s Graham Mincher, who averaged 27.1 points, was named to the special mention list as was South Range’s Preston Stitt.
On the honorable mention list are Champion’s Lucas Nasonti and Mineral Ridge’s Zane Rummell.
