Rangers homer twice to beat Indians

SURPRISE, ARIZ.

Prince Fielder hit his first spring homer and Joey Gallo hit a mammoth shot for his third as the Texas Rangers topped the Cleveland Indians 5-4 Tuesday.

Fielder homered to center off Carlos Carrasco in the third inning. Joey Gallo hit a two-run shot off a party tent behind the right-center grassy knoll against Tom Gorzelanny in the fifth.

Left-hander Martin Perez allowed one run on five hits, walked none and struck out four in four innings in his first outing after appearing in a ‘B’ game and a minor league game.

Perez yielded singles to Rajai Davis, who had three hits, and Shane Robinson to leadoff the game, but coaxed Carlos Santana to roll into a double play on the first pitch.

Giovanny Urshela and Michael Martinez homered for the Indians.

Free-agent linebacker Davis visiting Browns

CLEVELAND

Free agent inside linebacker Demario Davis is visiting the Browns, who may have to replace Craig Robertson.

The 27-year-old Davis played the past four seasons for the New York Jets. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder started every game the past three seasons for New York, which drafted him in the third round in 2012 out of Arkansas State.

Davis had 90 tackles and two sacks last season. He recorded more than 100 tackles in 2013 and 2014.

The Browns may need to bolster their depth at linebacker if Robertson, who has made free agent visits to several teams, signs elsewhere.

Steelers sign OT Ryan Harris to 2-year deal

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran left tackle Ryan Harris to a two-year contract Tuesday, likely ending any chance the Steelers had of bringing back free agent Kelvin Beachum.

The 31-year-old Harris started all 16 games at last season for the Denver Broncos, protecting for Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler as the Broncos won the franchise’s third Super Bowl.

Harris has started 70 of 110 career games while splitting his time with Denver, Houston and Kansas City.

Pittsburgh entered free agency looking for depth along the line. The Steelers re-signed guard Ramon Foster last week before free agency began, but didn’t reach an agreement with Beachum, a former seventh-round pick who eventually became a starter.

QB Prescott’s breath tests were inconclusive

STARKVILLE, MISS.

Former Mississippi State quarterback and NFL draft prospect Dak Prescott took two inconclusive breathalyzer tests following a traffic stop for speeding on Saturday night.

Prescott was arrested and charged with speeding and driving under the influence in Starkville. His first court appearance is scheduled for April 11.

Police records state that Prescott was pulled over at 12:31 a.m. and took two breathalyzer tests at 1:13 a.m. and 1:47 a.m. The first result was an “invalid sample” and the second was an “insufficient sample.”

NHL GMs debate new goalie equipment

BOCA RATON, FLA.

Goaltending equipment was the hot topic Tuesday on the second day of the NHL general managers meeting with the focus on making it smaller to increase scoring.

The league has tried for a decade to manage equipment, adjusting it proportionally to each goalie’s size. NHL goaltending consultant Kay Whitmore and executive vice president of hockey operations Colin Campbell said they want to clear up the gray area.

Whitmore said the plan is for manufacturers to have the more form-fitting equipment delivered to goaltenders in June so they have time to adapt before training camp.

If agreed to by the NHL Players’ Association, it could be mandatory for the 2016 season.
