SUPER TUESDAY | No Mahoning County precinct went without GOP ballots

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Board of Elections sent out 6,000 additional Republican ballots today to 65 precincts.

"We didn't want to run out," said Tom McCabe, deputy director of the board of elections.

The board initially had 42,000 ballots printed, which is 200 percent more than the the registered 14,000 Republicans in the county.

The Ohio Secretary of State recommends there be at least 20 percent more ballots from the number of registered voters.

But given the heavy turnout of absentee voters changing from their registered party the board knew there be a need for more Republican ballots, McCabe explained.

At no time did any precinct run out of Republican ballots.

"We had more people Republican ballots than we had registered by noon," McCabe said. "We were keeping track of it."

The number of Republican ballots used will not be known until all results from the 212 precincts in the county are in.
