London base jumper leaps safely off EU’s tallest building

LONDON

Witnesses said a base jumper safely parachuted from the European Union’s tallest building, the Shard in London, and evaded police by jumping on the subway.

Passers-by captured the stunt on social media Saturday. Video footage and photographs showed the man with green chute deployed floating from the Shard onto a street near the London Bridge station.

They say the unidentified man folded his chute, handed it to an accomplice and ran into the station minutes before police arrived.

It’s the first documented base jump since the 2012 completion of the Shard, a spire-shaped skyscraper that stands 95 stories and 1,016 feet high. Base jumpers did film themselves leaping from the structure when it still was under construction. The finished building has no external rooftop viewing platform.

Cops: Man locked out of house locked up for unpaid fines

ALTOONA, Pa.

Police say a central Pennsylvania man who locked himself out of his house wound up locked up in jail once emergency responders realized he had unpaid court fines.

The Altoona Mirror reports 35-year-old Jeffrey Jones climbed onto the roof Sunday night while trying to get into his house through a window but had to call 911 when he got stuck.

Altoona police say that’s when they discovered Jones was wanted by the Blair County sheriff’s office for failing to pay about $750 in court costs and fines.

As a result, Jones was taken to jail, where he remained Monday.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Jones.

Woman accused of stealing taxi, telling driver destination

DENVER

A Denver woman has been accused of stealing a taxi, but not before she told the driver where she was headed.

KMGH-TV reports that the cabdriver called police early Friday to say that a woman got in his cab and asked to go to a 7-Eleven store.

Police say she then threatened him with a knife, kicked him out of the taxi and took off in the vehicle.

The woman ditched the cab but walked to the convenience store she initially had mentioned. Police say she was arrested there and taken into custody.
