Concussion seminar

Concussion seminar

DAMASCUS

A free seminar about understanding concussions, including symptoms, treatment and prevention, will be presented by Family Medicine Physician, Dr. Jeffrey R. Cohen, D.O., from Firestone Healthcare, Inc., from 1 to 2 p.m. April 12 in the Canyon View Room at Damascus Friends Church, 28857 Walnut St.

Every year, more than 1 million Americans suffer a concussion, a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head; and while most people with a concussion recover fully within a few weeks, immediate treatment is a critical step in reducing the risk of long-term health effects.

Light refreshments will be served, and RSVPs are not required to attend the program. This free seminar is sponsored by Auburn Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation, Community Hospice, Damascus Friends Church and Salem Regional Medical Center. For information, call 330-787-1715.

Women treating cancer

SALEM

Women undergoing cancer treatment can learn techniques for looking and feeling their best during an upcoming session of the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good…Feel Better” program from 10 a.m. to noon April 27 at Salem Regional Medical Center in classrooms 3 and 4 on the hospital’s second floor.

During the workshop, a trained volunteer cosmetologist helps women cope with appearance-related side effects of treatment by offering assistance with makeup application, skin care, and hair and wig techniques. Light refreshments will be provided, and participants should bring a T-shirt of any color that can be cut for a special project.

Pre-registration is required to receive a personalized makeup kit to use during the workshop. Call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 by April 13.

Recertification awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

ValleyCare Health System of Ohio’s Northside Medical Center was recently awarded recertification by The Joint Commission for its hip and knee joint replacement programs.

The Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification Program is designed to evaluate clinical programs across the continuum of care. Programs that demonstrate compliance in the following areas are awarded certification for a two-year period: Compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective and consistent use of appropriate, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care; and an organized approach to performance measurement and improvement activities specific to hip and knee replacement.

“Recertification demonstrates our commitment to higher standards of clinical care and service,” said Mary Ann Hall, chief quality officer.
