Connecticut Navy base deals with a feral cat problem

GROTON, Conn.

Feral cats are stalking a submarine base in Connecticut, and officials say anyone caught feeding the felines will face disciplinary action.

The Day reported that officials at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton have stepped up enforcement of a policy to not feed feral animals. Sailors who disobey could face a range of actions as outlined by the U.S. Code of Military Justice. Civilian workers also could be punished.

Base spokesman Chris Zendan says feral cats pose a public health threat and also are a risk to the base’s operation.

Base officials previously reached out to animal shelters and convened a “feral cat summit” last year to research solutions.

The cats have been spotted near where submarines are docked and there are many storage facilities.

Albuquerque police say man sold drugs out of portable toilet

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.

Police say an undercover drug bust netted an Albuquerque drug dealer who was doing business out of an adult video store’s portable toilet.

The Albuquerque Journal reported that 22-year-old Aaron Gonzales was arrested in the Pussycat Video store’s parking lot recently and is facing drug-trafficking charges. Andres Plata, an 18-year-old who is accused of leading an undercover officer to Gonzales, also was arrested.

Court documents show Plata, who said he was Gonzales’ brother, took the officer to the portable toilet after he asked him for heroin.

The officer ended up buying $10 worth of heroin and $10 worth of methamphetamine as part of the investigation before Gonzales was arrested.

It’s not known whether Gonzales or Plata have an attorney.

Sheriff: Man taking selfies with gun fatally shoots himself

CONCRETE, Wash.

A 43-year-old man has died after authorities say he accidentally shot himself in the face while taking selfies.

The Skagit Valley Herald reported that the man and his girlfriend were photographing themselves with the weapon recently at a residence when he shot himself.

Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Chief Chad Clark says the woman reported that she and the man had taken photos with the gun several times and that the man had loaded and unloaded bullets multiple times.

Clark says a bullet apparently remained in the gun the final time he fired.

The death is being investigated as accidental. The man’s name has not been released.
