YOUNGSTOWN

Police said a man who led police on a car and foot chase early Friday got away, then decided to surrender to authorities because he did not want his mother’s car to be towed or have her arrested for pills found in the vehicle.

Walter Williams, 21, of Redondo Road, is in the Mahoning County jail after being taken into custody about 1:05 a.m. in the 200 block of Madison Avenue on the North Side.

Reports said Williams led an officer on a chase reaching speeds up to 80 mph before running from his car after he stopped it, leaping a fence and getting away.

As police were searching the car, reports said Williams returned and said he was the driver. He decided to surrender because he did not want the car to be towed because it belonged to his mother.

Reports said Williams had some pills and discovered after he ran away they were not in his pocket. He did not want his mother to be charged for having them. Reports said officers found seven pills in the car.
