Warren cop treated after lifesaving antidote given to drug victim

WARREN

A police officer had to be treated at the hospital emergency room after bodily fluids got on him from a man who became combative after the officer administered naloxone, the opiate reversal drug.

Charles J. Elrod Sr., 28, of Old State Road in Middlefield, staggered toward the officer’s cruiser Tuesday morning in the 1900 block of Hazelwood Avenue Southeast and was placed in the back of the cruiser.

He was taken to jail on a warrant, but he appeared to fall unconscious on the way, and naloxone was administered, Warren police said.

Afterward, he kicked and screamed wildly, so Patrolman Frank Tempesta tried to hold him down, but blood and vomit got on the officer’s shirt and face. Two other officers arrived to assist, but Elrod still did not calm down, even after ambulance workers and hospital workers administered several shots to help him. No additional charges were filed against Elrod.
